War on fake news, WhatsApp blocks 2.4 million accounts

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – WhatsApp announced that nearly 2.4 million accounts in India were blocked last July. This number is the highest in 2022.

The number of blocked accounts from July 1 to July 31, 2022 was 2,387,000 accounts. Of these, 1.42 million had been blocked before reports from users of the platform were cited ReutersFriday (2/9/2022).

For information, WhatsApp blocks user accounts in several ways. One of them consists of user complaints submitted through the company’s complaint channel.

Additionally, WhatsApp also provides tools and resources to detect flaws in the platform.

Last July, Meta’s instant messaging platform received a total of 574 complaints. Meanwhile, the number of accounts deleted in the previous month in India was 2.21 million.

WhatsApp has already come under heavy criticism. Because the platforms are considered to spread fake news and also hate speech in India.

Meanwhile, Indian IT law requires tech giants to publish compliance reports. The report must be published monthly.

The draft rules released last June called for a panel to hear appeals. In addition, major social media platforms can identify the author of the first information if the court orders it.
