Indian security agencies established supremacy: Interior Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Secretary Amit Shah said Friday Indian security agencies have successfully established their supremacy and no one can ignore the country in any area anymore or stop anyone from advancing.

Speaking at the opening session of a three-day conference of DGPs and IGPs here, he said India is definitely safe, strong and on good footing now under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The PMO said in a press release Prime Minister Modi will attend the All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police to be held at the National Agricultural Science Complex.

“Since 2014, the Prime Minister has been very interested in the DGP conference. In contrast to the symbolic presence of the prime ministers earlier, he sits at all important meetings of the conference.

The Prime Minister not only listens patiently to all contributions, but also encourages free and informal discussion to allow new ideas to emerge, the Office of the Prime Minister’s (PMO) statement said.

This provides a congenial atmosphere for the country’s top police officers to brief the prime minister directly on important policing and homeland security issues and make open and honest recommendations, it said.

The publication said the conference, guided by the prime minister’s vision, launched discussions on futuristic issues in policing and security.

On the first day of the conference, the Home Secretary also distributed police medals for meritorious service and presented trophies to the top three police departments in the country.

Issues such as security challenges at land borders with Nepal and Myanmar, strategies to identify overstay foreigners in India and attacks on Maoist strongholds were discussed, officials said.

Over the next two days, the country’s top police leadership, together with experts, field staff and academics, will discuss new security challenges and opportunities.

“Under Modi’s leadership, the Indian security authorities have managed to establish their supremacy. Today no one can ignore India in any field, nor can anyone stop her from moving forward,” he said.

Shah said earlier the country’s problems are geographic, now the problems are becoming thematic and for that the security agencies need to bring about a paradigm shift in their strategy and approach.

“We used to have one-dimensional problems, but now the problems are multidimensional. To deal with them, we must be two steps ahead of those who commit crimes. We need to change the method of the city police quickly. Even in police capacity building, a lot of attention needs to be paid,” he said.

Shah said to make internal security impenetrable, the police must be empowered and the Modi government and the interior ministry would fully cooperate with states.

Regarding the situation in Jammu and Kashmir after the repeal of Article 370, he said that there was a time when militant children from Jammu and Kashmir went to other parts of the country for study. “But today, 32,000 children from other parts of the country are studying in Jammu and Kashmir,” Shah said.

“Similarly, the sum of investments made in the last four years is higher than in Jammu and Kashmir in the last 70 years,” he said.
