The two-day G20 Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) will start in Pune on Monday, with participants discussing various aspects of infrastructure investment.
The meeting will be attended by 65 delegates from IWG member countries, host nations and international organizations invited by India to discuss the 2023 infrastructure agenda under India’s G20 presidency, according to an official press release.
The Economy Ministry, Treasury Ministry and Government of India will host the two-day IWG meetings with Australia and Brazil as co-chairs, the release said.
“The G20 Working Group on Infrastructure is advising on various aspects of infrastructure investment, including developing infrastructure as an asset class, promoting quality infrastructure investment and identifying innovative tools to mobilize financial resources for infrastructure investment,” it said.
Findings from the infrastructure working group feed into the priorities of the G20 finance track to promote a common goal of economic growth, she added.
Over the years, the Infrastructure Working Group has focused on key infrastructure development issues such as: Building infrastructure as an asset class, promoting quality indicators for infrastructure investments (QII), the infratech agenda and others.
The motto of the Indian G20 Presidency “One Earth, One Family, One Future” sets the tone for the Infrastructure Agenda 2023 as it underscores the message of equitable growth and aptly ties in with the central agenda of discussions aimed at building more resilient and more inclusive structures, and sustainable urban infrastructure, the release said.
“At the Pune meeting, discussions will focus on the agenda for the Infrastructure Working Group under the Indian Presidency. The main priority to be discussed at this meeting is ‘Financing the Cities of Tomorrow: Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable,'” it said.
The theme will focus on different facets to turn cities into economic growth hubs, finance and build sustainable urban infrastructure, direct tax investments to unlock private finance for energy-efficient and green infrastructure, and mitigate social imbalances, the press release said.
On day one on Monday, IWG delegates will conduct a series of official meetings and discuss the 2023 infrastructure agenda.
After lunch, they would visit the University of Pune to plant trees, followed by a high-level workshop on ‘Financing for Tomorrow’s Cities’, with the day ending with a networking dinner.
On Jan. 17, the IWG will consider four sessions, followed by “thanksgiving” to delegates, after which there will be a farewell dinner, the press release said.
“Apart from the formal discussions, delegates can experience the city’s rich culture and beautiful landscapes with optional excursions such as the Pune Heritage Walk, a city tour and a trip to Mahabaleshwar,” the press release said.
