With a total wealth of $146.9 billion, Adani has managed to climb the Billionaire Index published by Bloomberg.
reported from CNNFriday (9/16) Adani needed less than 10 months to reach this position after starting 14th last year.
Adani’s achievement also places him as the first Asian to reach the top position in the wealth list, having been dominated for so long by tech entrepreneurs from Europe or America.
Most of Adani’s activities are linked to the Adani Group conglomerate which covers a wide range of activities. Adani Group focuses on port and coal activities, which have grown rapidly in recent years.
In nearly three years, Adani has controlled seven airports and almost a quarter of Indian air traffic. The group is now the largest private operator of airports, power stations and town gas distribution in India.
Shares of some of Adani’s companies have jumped more than 1,000% since June 2020, reflecting investor optimism about the conglomerate’s strength in areas such as infrastructure and renewable energy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gives priority to development. Shares of Adani Enterprises also rose more than 115% in 2022.
In February, Adani replaced Indian conglomerate Mukesh Ambani as Asia’s richest person.
Adani’s business progress has not been smooth sailing. He never even graduated from higher education, when he studied commerce at the University of Gujarat.
But from the start, Adani was exposed to commercial activities. He had tried his luck in the diamond business in the early 80s in Mumbai, but the results were also unsatisfactory.
Adani returned to her hometown in Gujarat to help the family business specializing in plastic products, until she founded Adani Power in 1996 to focus on the power sector.
Today, Adani’s company has grown into six companies, namely Adani Enterprises, Adani Green Energy, Adani Ports & SEZ, Adani Power, Adani Transmission, Adani Total Gas and Adani Wilmar.
Meanwhile, the total wealth of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is believed to have plummeted to $145.8 billion, according to a Bloomberg report.
Bezos himself was once ranked as the number one richest person in the world, but his wealth has dropped significantly due to his divorce in 2019.
He was succeeded by Elon Musk at the time, who still tops the list as the richest person in the world with a total wealth of US$260 billion.
