News Badminton: Malaysia’s Indonesian mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto is adamant it’s ‘mission impossible’ to get one of the new pairs – Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Hoo Pang Ron-Teoh Mei Xing – to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. .

Tang Jie-Ee Wei is currently ranked 148th in the world while Pang Ron-Mei Xing is 10 places below her at 158th and it will be a very difficult task for them to reach the last eight before the end of the period. qualification on April 28, 2024. . .

The fact that the independent pair have stepped up the qualifying race as Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing are Malaysia’s 5th highest ranked in the world with Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Lai Jemie in 8th place will put Nova under huge pressure.

However, the Indonesian coach relished the challenge.

β€œIt won’t be easy because they’re not in the top 140 in the world and we have about 15 months to get them into the top eight. It’s a tough job, but I’m sure we can still do it,” Nova said.

“Due to the theoretical ranking, they can initially play in super 700 or higher tournaments. After that they should focus on playing in super 100-300 events and if necessary also play in challenge series international players to ensure they move up the rankings faster.

“Both pairs have quality and depending on the opponent, they could win a super 100 or super 300 event. However, I think they need at least another eight months to materialize and establish themselves as a quality international pair,” he added.

Theoretical rankings helped Tang Jie-Ee Wei qualify for the super 1000 Malaysia Open (January 10-15) and the super 750 India Open in New Delhi (January 17-22), but they couldn’t qualify for the Indonesian Masters, a super 500, in Jakarta from January 24-29.

To ensure that the two partners receive enough attention, Nova started training them informally from Friday, the day after his arrival, and only takes a break on Sundays for the Christmas holidays.

Nova Widianto, 45, will officially take office on January 1.

β€œI started early and have been with them since Friday. This is a half-day session as I only officially started on January 1, but it will help my partner adjust to my training method,” Nova added.

“It will be good for them to play the Malaysian and Indian Open where there are enough world rankings to win and also to play top pair.”

Both pairs showed their potential by winning titles in their first two tournaments this month.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei beat Phatharathorn Niporn-ram-Alisa Sapniti of Thailand 21-15, 21-13 at the Bangladesh International Challenge in Dhaka but they lost to Pang Ron-Mei Xing 18-21, 21-15, 21-19 in the final of the Malaysia International Challenge in Ipoh.

Nova Widianto is blessed with strong credentials, having coached the Indonesian mixed doubles team for 11 years, and it will be interesting to see how quickly Tang Jie-Ee Wei and Pang Ron/Mei Xing rise to the next level under his tutelage.
