Suspension bridge in India collapses, hundreds fall into river

Suspension bridge in the western state of Gujarat India collapse. Hundreds of people fell into the river as a result of this incident.

Reported by Reuters, this incident happened on Sunday (30/10/2022). Local television Zee News reported that more than 400 people were on a bridge in the town of Morbi at the time and plunged into the Machchu River.

A senior police official, Rahul Tripathi, said several victims were injured. Currently the evacuation is in progress.

“People have fallen into the river and there are casualties. We don’t know the number yet. The rescue operation is ongoing,” Rahul Tripathi told Reuters.

Footage broadcast by television stations showed dozens of people clinging to the cables of the collapsed bridge as emergency crews attempted to rescue them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had ordered the state’s chief minister to immediately mobilize a team for the rescue operation.

Note, this historic 230 meter long bridge was built under British rule in the 19th century. The bridge was closed for renovations for six months and reopened to the public last week.
