Boris Johnson, 58, has been a modest British MP since stepping down as Prime Minister – in a high-paying part-time job. Politicians with flowery rhetoric are often booked by companies as speakers and make good money from it.

In recent months, Johnson has received more than a million pounds (nearly 1.2 million euros) in speaking fees. He is paid between £215,000 and £277,000 per appearance. That’s according to data from the Perks Register of UK Members of Parliament, which was updated on Wednesday.

As an MP, the former head of government must state what income he has besides his parliamentary work – and how much time is devoted to it. According to this, Johnson currently has an hourly wage of around 30,000 pounds (nearly 35,000 euros).

Since leaving office in September, Johnson has performed in the United States, India and Portugal, among other venues. For example, he spoke to banks and insurance companies and at conferences hosted by the US television channel CNN. Conservative Party politicians received £277,724 just for speeches in New York for financial firm Centerview Partners. The US company had booked Johnson for nine hours and paid for travel to the US and the costs of two companions.

Johnson stepped down in July after a series of scandals after about three years in office. He remains a British Conservative MP in the House of Commons in London.

Following the resignation of his successor Liz Truss, 47, after just weeks in office, Johnson briefly attempted a spectacular political comeback in October. In contrast, conservative lawmakers backed former finance minister and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, 42.
