Commitment to the Ukrainian war party
While Wagenknecht saw the United States and NATO as partly responsible for the Ukraine war, the party newspaper blamed Russia and stressed: “We are committed to Ukraine’s right to defend itself and call for the full restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty.” Another difference of opinion: Wagenknecht recently described the Greens as the most dangerous party in the Bundestag, while many leftists attribute this role to the AfD. The “Leipzig Declaration” now emphasizes “a clear edge against the right”.
In addition, the paper reaffirms well-known demands, including top-down redistribution, “strengthening society” for basic needs such as housing or energy supply, more assistance to the poor and tackling debt brakes. Ending the Ukrainian war required diplomatic initiatives, including from China and India, “that could influence Russia to reach a ceasefire and negotiate peace”.
For the upcoming election, party leaders drew a line to continue to participate in government in Berlin and Bremen and to be as strong as possible in Bavaria, Schleswig-Holstein and Hesse. “Therefore, our goal is to strengthen the left wing in the upcoming elections,” the newspaper wrote.
