IIn the summer, Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a guest of the G-7 summit. That is the right approach to dealing with this partner country. India While it likes to call itself “the world’s greatest democracy”, that doesn’t mean that Delhi is marching in the same direction as the rest of the world’s democracies.
This is most obvious when it comes to Ukraine. Here India is first and foremost pursuing its own national interest – or what the government does mode think so. Since independence, Delhi has avoided integration into a fixed alliance structure. You want to be able to make decisions independently in every situation.
Get involved early
For Germany and Europe, this means that relations with India require drilling very thick boards. The offer that the West can make Indians is quite interesting. There are many common interests. But even Americans cannot come to Delhi with a firm decision and then hope that they will “nod” there. This is especially true for Europe.
Hence, India should be involved early in many decision-making processes and in this way set an example of how the 21st century world can solve its problems. After all, the Chinese method is not suitable for this.
