The release of 11 Muslim rapists after confirmation by the Indian government

Their release sparked widespread outrage at the time and was contrasted with Prime Minister Modi’s Independence Day speech in which he championed respect for women.
The letter accepting their release came from India’s Home Ministry, led by Amit Shah, a close associate of Modi and Amit Shah, and was posted on The Leaflet’s official website.
It was not clear at the time that the central government had approved their release.
