The former teacher is indeed the second woman to hold the post of President of India, as well as the supreme commander of the armed forces of the country.

1. Born in an underdeveloped region of India

Murmu was born into a Santhal tribal family in 1958. She is one of the women from Uparbeda, a village in the backward district of Mayurbhanj, who managed to continue her education to university.

She studied at Ramadevi Women’s College, now known as Ramadevi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar.

2. Was a teacher

Prior to entering politics, Murmu was a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Center in Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj.

After that, he worked as a junior assistant in the Irrigation and Electricity Department of Odisha State Government.

3. Was the Transport Minister of Odisha

Murmu served as a member of the Odisha legislature for two terms. He was elected in 2000 and 2004.

Murmu was also Odisha’s transport minister.

4. Lost three family members

Since 2009, Murmu has had to deal with various losses. Her first son, Laxman Murmu, died in 2009.

Her other son, Sippun Murmu, died in 2013.

A year later, her husband, Shyam Charan Murmu, died in 2014.
