42 countries demand Russia’s withdrawal from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

According to the local mayor, the situation around the Ukrainian nuclear power plant Zaporizhia is becoming increasingly critical. The risk of a nuclear disaster at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant “is increasing every day,” the mayor of the town of Enerhodar, where the nuclear power plant is located, said in a phone call to AFP at the power plant Sunday, added Dmytro Orlov.

“What happens there is more orderly nuclear terrorism”, criticized the mayor Enerhodar Orlov of the city of Zaporizhia, which is still under Ukrainian control. “It could end unexpectedly at any time.” Fire protection rules were repeatedly violated and the situation “continued to heat up”.

“The invaders continue to terrorize the civilian population and the nuclear power plant,” the mayor criticized. Mortar shells were fired from the occupied villages every day and night. “The situation is risky and what is most worrying is that there is no de-escalation process.” Orlov told AFP.

The mayor had left Enerhodar in April. According to him, the city was first bombed over the weekend. The number of those wanting to leave the city has increased dramatically. In “in the near future” there may not be enough staff left for the proper operation of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant.
