On Sunday August 27th, Nemzeti Atlétikai Központ in Budapest shook for the last time: the World Championships in Athletics was coming to an end. France saved the honor by winning a silver medal in the men’s 4 x 400 meters.
With seven finals in the program, the final night of competition also allows India, Pakistan and Bahrain to invite themselves to this 19th podium.e World edition. Forty-six countries were entered in the medal tally, mostly dominated by the United States.
In the javelin throw, Neeraj Chopra wrote a history of Indian athletics
Already the first Olympic champion in his country’s history in track and field in Tokyo in 2021, Neeraj Chopra did it again in Budapest by becoming India’s first world champion in a sport that continues to go global.
Neeraj Chopra threw 88.17 meters on his second attempt. He won ahead of another representative from the Indian subcontinent, Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan (87.82m). The bronze medalist comes from a traditional javelin-throwing country: Czech Jakub Vadlejch (86.67m). Two other Indians, Kishore Jena and DP Manu, took 5th placee and 6e place.
Like 2015 world champion Julius Yego of Kenya, Neeraj Chopra first perfected his move by watching videos of Czech Jan Zelezny, world record holder in the specialty, triple Olympiad and three-time world champion.
The 25-year-old Indian javelin thrower is in the process of building a series of incredible feats: Olympic champion, world champion and co-champion of the world. Last year, in Oregon, he was overtaken by Grenadine Anderson Peters.
As an emerging athletics nation, India also qualified for the 4 x 400 m torchbearer team to the final. In long jump, two of its representatives – who were the best players in the world for the season before the World Championships – were present in Hungary. But, Murali Sreeshankar was eliminated in the qualifiers. Jeswin Aldrin took the number 11e place.
The French torchbearer avoided defeat by the Blues
We no longer expected him and he came at the last event of the Worlds. The silver medal did not completely change the very disappointing tricolor character of the balance sheet, but it did allow France to avoid the humiliation of zero points.
Les Bleus in the 4 x 400 m – Ludvy Vaillant, Gilles Biron, David Sombe and Téo Andant – took second place, beating the French record for specialties (2 min 58 sec 45). The United States won easily in 2 minutes 57 seconds 31. England complete the podium.
Bahrain Winfred Mutile Yavi won the very fast 3000m hurdles race
Winfred Mutile Yavi became world champion in the 3,000m hurdles, with 4e fastest time of all time: 8 minutes 54 seconds 29. Born in Kenya and naturalized in 2015, she is seconds ahead of her two former compatriots, Beatrice Chepkoech and Faith Cherotich. At 23 years old, the development curve is impressive: 10e at the Olympics in 2021, 4e at Worlds in 2022, and is now 1D in 2023.

List
One lap away from the finish, in 10th placee place, Alice Finot of France put in a stunning final lap to take an excellent fifth place, again improving her French record by 4 seconds, at 9 minutes 6 seconds 15. She equaled Sophie Duarte, the last French athlete to fifth in the hurdles 3000 meters at the 2007 world championships.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s revenge
Beaten by a Briton for the second straight year in the 1500m world final, Jakob Ingebrigtsen did in Budapest what he did in Eugene (Ohio) last year: won the 5000m.
During a race that accelerated sharply on the last lap – a favorable scenario for the leading 1500m runner – the Norwegian suffered, but he managed to overtake, in the final meters, Spain’s Mohamed Katir to claim the gold (13 min 11 s 30). The bronze medal went to Jacob Krop from Kenya. Frenchman Jimmy Gressier scored an encouraging 9e place.
The Scandinavian mid-range prodigy is less in sparring than usual. “I caught the virus on Sunday. I didn’t feel well during this championshiphe explained. I want to run and do my best. It wasn’t a very pleasant experience but thanks to the support of the community, I made it. » At 22 years old, he is still building an impressive track record outdoors: one Olympic title, two world titles and two world silver medals.
Another silver medal for Keely Hodgkinson in the 800 meters
The Briton has taken third and second place in major athletics competitions: already a silver medalist at the 2021 Olympics, then at the 2022 Worlds, she has once again failed in her quest for gold.
It was Mary Moora of Kenya who won in 1 minute 56 seconds 3. Keely Hodgkinson finished 31 hundredths, while American Athing Mu, who led by far, fell short in the home game (1 minutes 56 61).
In Paris, at the next Olympics, Keely Hodgkinson will try to get to the top of the podium. He will be one of England’s excellent mid-range headliners who made a comeback this summer in Hungary.
Ukraine world title in women’s high jump
Yaroslava Mahuchikh dominated the high jump contest, beating Australian athletes Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers. The Ukrainian jumper covered 2.01m to become world champion, while her rival stayed at 1.99m. Nawel Meniker and Solène Gicquel of France finished 12the and 15e.
And the final title went to the Dutch torchbearer
The 4 x 400 meter torchbearer from the Dutch team won the ultimate gold medal at the extremist world championships. Thanks to a stunning last lap from Femke Bol, the Dutch rider – along with Eveline Saalberg, Lieke Klaver, Cathelijn Peeters – beat Jamaica. England finished in third place.
