Badminton News: Young badminton player Unnati Hooda shone brightly as India won 3-2 against Australia in Group B of the BWF World Junior Championships Mixed Team Tournament which took place in Spain.
Hooda, 15, from Haryana, kept India in the game after men’s doubles Arsh Mohammad and Abhinav Thakur lost their opening match.
Women’s doubles pair Isharani Baruah/Devika Sihag, and mixed doubles Vignesh Thathineni/Srinidhi Narayanan then won their last two matches and India emerged victorious.
Earlier, Arsh and Abhinav failed to get past Ricky Tang and Otto Xing De Zhao, losing 12-21 and 17-21 to give Australia the lead.
Unnati, the Odisha Open champion, put on a clinical display to beat Sydney Go 21-6 and 21-9 to bring India back into the competition.
In men’s singles, Bharat Raghav’s bout ended in a narrow 19-21, 21-16, 15-21 loss to Jack Yu as Australia led 2-1.
Isharani and Devika then took center stage and beat Australian pair Dania Nugroho and Catrina Chia/Yu Tan 21-8, 21-8 to make it 2-2.
Vignesh and Srinidhi then provided the finishing touches with 21-12, 21-16 victories over Otto Xing De Zhao and Yuelin Zhang to claim victory at the 2022 World Junior Championships.
India had beaten Iceland 5-0 before suffering a 0-5 loss to China.
The fifth seed will face Slovenia in their final Group B match.
India signed in 12th place in the last edition in 2019. The country’s best result was a fourth place in the 2008 edition.
India are currently behind China in second place in their group. Only the first-placed team will advance to the quarter-finals, while the second-placed team will compete for the 9-16 seeding.
