Google Play said on Thursday the company will continue to invest in India to solve local opportunities and challenges as it celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Indian apps and games saw a 200 percent increase in monthly active users and an 80 percent increase in consumer spending in 2021 compared to 2019 on Google Play.
Aditya Swamy, Director, Play Partnerships said that local developers are finding global audiences with Indian apps and games and seeing a 150 percent increase in the time users outside of India spend on Google Play in 2021 compared to 2019.
“We will continue to invest in initiatives that enable a variety of developers to build helpful apps and successful businesses on Play,” Swamy said in a blog post.
“We want to help every developer with an idea to leverage the potential to reach 2.5 billion monthly active users and 190 countries with Google Play,” he added.
India is uniquely positioned to become a leading hub for global app innovation and there is huge potential for native startups across the country – regardless of size and geography – to thrive in the global app ecosystem.
“We will continue to evolve our tools to support developers’ business decisions and continue to evolve our business models to help them grow their businesses,” Swamy said.
More than 2 million developers work with Google Play to build businesses and reach people around the world.
“We’re excited to see what Play’s developer and user communities in India will experience and build over the next 10 years,” said Swamy.
The company said it has seen tremendous growth in apps in categories like education, payments, health, entertainment and gaming over the past two years.
“There has also been a great dynamic in gaming. Ludo King became one of the first Indian games to surpass 500 million downloads,” said Google Play.
