Making the new hinge mechanism thinner and lighter while maintaining its sturdiness has been one of the biggest challenges in developing a new foldable phone, a Samsung executive said.
“Two essential elements are required to produce a successful foldable phone: a flexible, foldable screen and hinges for folding and unfolding operations,” said Dr. Choi Won-joon, head of the flagship product R&D team of Samsung’s Mobile Experience division.
“Making a hinge that is more compact and lighter without compromising its durability is a huge challenge,” Choi said at a press conference in Berlin on the sidelines of Europe’s largest technology fair, ‘IFA 2022,’ the agency reported.
Developers were finally able to come up with a new hinge system, called the spiral hinge, Choi said, after about 20 failed attempts over a span of nearly a year.
Samsung has launched its newest foldable smartphone in around 40 countries, hoping the new product can revive sluggish global smartphone sales amid high inflation.
The company has received a record number of orders of one lakh for the new Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 foldable smartphones in India.
Samsung said its fourth-generation foldable device in India broke pre-order records last year, showing strong interest in the new device.
