Exhibition shows 171 Magnificent Artifacts from the Ancient City of Dunhuang
The National Silk Museum of China opened the fourth annual Silk Road Week on July 12, 2023 with the announcement of this year’s theme, “Silk Road: Long Road, Common Goals.” The highlight of the event was the exhibition themed “Convergence of Civilizations: Dunhuang on the Silk Road”, which presented 171 beautiful artefacts related to the ancient city of Dunhuang.
The exhibition is divided into four sections: politics, economics and trade in Dunhuang in ancient times; Society and life in Dunhuang in ancient times; Millennium Friendship between Dunhuang and Zhejiang Provinces; and the caves and murals at Dunhuang. The exhibition presents Dunhuang’s glorious past along the Silk Road from various perspectives, including political, military, economic, trade and cultural life.
Located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor, Dunhuang has been the transportation hub of the Silk Road since the time of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty and the gateway to the western regions, where bustling messengers and itinerant merchants vied. China’s concepts of peace and diplomatic cooperation, openness and inclusion, mutual learning and mutual benefit are clearly displayed on land and on the many ships that call in ports.
Another interesting focus of the Dunhuang exhibition is the Mogao Cave 285 Cave reconstruction simulation in the museum gallery. Rich in artistic and religious elements, Cave 285 depicts not only Buddhism but also Taoism and Brahmanism in India, vividly depicting the convergence of Eastern and Western religious arts.
In addition to the Dunhuang exhibition, this year’s Silk Road Week will feature a series of lectures on Dunhuang stories, a Silk Road painting game, and an exhibition of Silk Road paintings through the eyes of young people, among others. In addition, the Silk Road Symposium brings together museum directors and researchers from France, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Spain, Italy, Hungary and China who have been invited to share their thoughts and experiences on the topics of “New Trends in Museum Curation” and “Dunhuang and Bursa” Silk Roads. “. In conjunction with the symposium, the Curators Forum organized visits to various themed museums in Hangzhou and Ningbo, where participants could study widely acclaimed exhibitions and engage in professional exchanges with curators.
