Badminton News: After pulling out of the fight for the top spot in the BAI selection trials due to fitness issues, former world number 11 Sameer Verma said on Tuesday he will be out for a few weeks and was considering a return to the Thailand Open.
“I have problems with my hip muscles and also with my shoulder. It’s not something serious but I don’t want to take any risks. The competition is tough and you can’t win games if you you’re not 100% fit,” Sameer Verma said on the sidelines.
“I’m going to take a few weeks off. I hope to play at the Thailand Open.”
The Indian team will play the Asian badminton championship from April 26, followed by the Thomas and Uber Cups (8-15 May, Bangkok).
The Super 500 Thailand Open will take place May 17-22 in Bangkok.
The 27-year-old from Madhya Pradesh looked good at last year’s Danish Open when he picked up convincing wins over Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Denmark’s Anders Antonsen before retiring from the quarters of final due to a calf injury.
He also played the French Open Super 750 next week, only to fall back in the second round. He is focused on his recovery over the next two months before competing in the first two events of the Indian tour, namely India Open Super 500 and Syed Modi International Super 300.
He lost in the first round at All England, before withdrawing in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open 2022.
As selection events were called to select teams for the Thomas & Uber Cup, the Commonwealth Games (July 28-August 8, Birmingham) and the Asian Games (Hangzhou, September 10-25), Sameer Verma decided to play and also reach the top 4 before withdrawal. .
“I don’t want to make the same mistakes as at the Danish Open last year,” he added.
