Badminton News: 2019 World Championships bronze medalist Sai Praneeth B failed to clear the opening hurdle after losing three matches but India’s representatives recorded double wins in women’s doubles and in mixed doubles on the opening day of the BWF World Championships taking place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Japan on Monday (8/22).

Sai Praneeth made a bold effort before losing the 15-21, 21-15, 15-21 draw to world number 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in less than an hour.

It was yet another memorable good performance in Tokyo for Praneeth, following his struggles at the Olympics last year where he competed without the right coach or physio only to end up retiring early.

However, former Commonwealth Games bronze medalists Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy advanced to the second round of women’s doubles with 21-7 and 21-9 wins over Aminath Nabeeha Abdul Razzaq and Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq .

Ashwini and Sikki will then face the difficult task of taming top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China in the second round of the 2022 World Championships.

In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto/Ishaan Bhatnagar managed to beat German duo Patrick Scheiel and Franziska Volkmann 21-13 and 21-13 in 29 minutes to also start their debut positively.

The Indian pair will then meet 14th seed Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand on Tuesday (8/23).

Last edition’s silver and bronze medalists Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen and former world number 8 HS Prannoy will be among the Indian badminton players who will face off later in the evening.
