Badminton News: Indian women’s singles star PV Sindhu is determined to add an individual Commonwealth Games gold medal to her growing collection of medals.
The 2019 world champion and silver medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics surprisingly did not win gold in the individual events of the quadrennial championship.
In the last edition of 2018 on the Gold Coast, Australia, PV Sindhu had to settle for a silver medal after failing in the final when he lost to his compatriot, Saina Nehwal. He won gold in the Mixed Tag Team Championship.
World number 7 Sindhu is determined to finally get his hands on individual gold this year in Birmingham.
“I really hope to win gold this time. It would mean a lot to me to represent my country at the Commonwealth Games and win,” Sindhu said.
The 26-year-old is considered the favorite for the title, but he prefers to be cautious.
“I wouldn’t say it will be easy for me. There are others I should know about, like Kirsty Gilmour from Scotland, Michelle Li from Canada, Goh Jin Wei from Malaysia and Yeo Jia Min from Singapore. He is so very important for me to stay focused and be the best,” added Sindhu.
The Indian looks good for gold judging by his performances at the Malaysian Open so far.
He advanced to the quarter-finals yesterday after overcoming a shaky opener to beat Thailand’s Phittayaporn Chaiwan 19-21, 21-9 and 21-14 in the second round.
Sindhu will face Taiwanese world number 2 Tai Tzu-ying today for a spot in the top four.
Sindhu needed an extraordinary performance to beat the Taiwanese player at his best who recently won the Indonesia Open.
The head-to-head record is very favorable to Tzu-ying who has won with 15 wins in his last 20 encounters.
So, PV Sindhu has to work harder to beat Tzu-ying and boost his confidence ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Tzu-ying earned a 21-11, 21-9 win over Kristin Kuuba of Estonia while China’s Chen Yufei also held on with a 21-12, 21-19 win over Busanan Ongbamrungphan , from Thailand.
Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand also came from behind to claim a 15-21, 21-12, 21-18 victory over Zhang Beiwen of the United States. Also eluded China’s Han Yue who upset third seed An Se-young of South Korea 21-23, 21-18, 21-16 to reach the last eight.
