Badminton News: PV Sindhu’s erratic form continued on Wednesday, when he was knocked out in the first round of the Korea Open Super 500 competition by Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu-Po in three matches.
PV Sindhu, who this week dropped to No. 17 in the world rankings, was beaten in the first round of women’s singles by Pai Yu-Po, 32, 18-21, 21-10, 13-21. The match lasted 58 minutes.
Besides PV Sindhu, India’s Priyanshu Rajawat, meanwhile, advanced to the second round of the men’s singles with an outright victory over local player, Choi Ji Hoon.
Orleans Masters winner Rajawat beat Choi 21-15 21-19 in 42 minutes to meet top seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan.
N Sikki Reddy and Rohan Kapoor, who won the international Victor Denmark Masters challenge in June, advanced to the second round with a 21-17, 21-17 victory over Alvin Morada and Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo of the Philippines. The Indian representative will next meet China’s Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping, the fourth seeds.
Kiran George, meanwhile, fell to Chinese Taipei’s world number 29 Wang Tzu wei in the other men’s singles match, losing 17-21, 9-21.
Aakarshi Kashyap, Tasnim Mir, Mithun Manjunath and Ashmita Chaliha were all knocked out in the first round, highlighting the huge difference in talent between the two Indian players.
While Kashyap fell to Chinese world number 20 Zhang Yi Man 12-21, 17-21, Mir fell to Korean world number 19 Kim Ga Eun 11-21, 18-21.
Mithun was no match for Malaysia’s world number 23, Ng Tze Yong, and Ashmita lost to Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei, losing 13-21, 12-21.
In the first round of mixed doubles, B Sumeeth Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa lost to Korea’s Song hyun Cho/Lee Jung Hyun, 21-23, 21-13, 12-21.
The BWF World Tour has six tiers: World Tour Finals, four Super 1000s, six Super 750s, seven Super 500s, and eleven Super 300s. The BWF Tour Super 100 Tier is another tournament category that awards ranking points.
