Badminton News: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu advanced to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters World Tour Super 500 tournament with a hard-fought victory over China’s Yi Man Zhang in women’s singles on Friday (26/5) in Kuala Lumpur .
For world number 13 Sindhu, it was something of a revenge for her last loss in 32 to 18th-ranked Zhang at the All England Open earlier this year. He also beat his Chinese opponent in the same tournament last year.
As Olympic doubles medalist Sindhu, seeded sixth in the tournament, beat China’s Zhang Yi Man Zhang 21-16, 13-21 22-20, Prannoy took a 25-23, 18-21, 21 win. -13 against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in another quarter-final clash.
PV Sindhu will next face seventh seed and world number nine Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia in the semi-finals on Saturday. Tunjung defeated second seed Yi Zhi Wang of China in the quarterfinals with back-to-back matches 21-18, 22-20.
Gregoria Mariska Tunjung has been in good form recently and Sindhu lost to her in the Madrid Spain Masters final in consecutive matches in April. However, the Indian would qualify for the semi-finals with a 7-1 advantage over Gergoria Tunjung.
World number nine Prannoy will face 57th-ranked qualifier Christian Adinata of Indonesia, who beat Kidambi Srikanth 16-21, 21-16, 21-11 in the other quarter-final, in Saturday’s semi-final.
Prannoy is yet to feature against 21-year-old Adinata, who started playing at senior level last year.
