Badminton News: Indian Priyanshu Rajawat qualified for the final of the Orleans Masters Super 300 badminton tournament by beating Irishman Nhat Nguyen in the semi-finals on Saturday (8/4) night.
The 21-year-old, who was part of the Indian squad that won the 2022 Thomas Cup, played an attacking game to beat world number 35 Nguyen 21-12, 21-9 in the men’s singles semi-final to secure qualify for his first world. Final of the Super 300 Tour.
He will then face the Chinese Lei Lan Xi in a match at the top.
Priyanshu Rajawat was sharp at the net and precise in his returns. He exploited his opponent’s forehand and the Indian’s flat and cross shots made it difficult for Nguyen who made many mistakes.
After the initial bout, Rajawat entered the mid-match break with an 11-9 lead. However, after the restart he dominated the rally to quickly go 17-11.
In the end, another strong comeback from the Indian ended on the attack as Rajawat took 10 game points and closed it with an accurate overhead return on the forehand of his opponent.
After the pitch change, Rajawat started in the same vein as the panting Irishman on the pitch. The Indian athlete produced powerful smashes from inside the court to keep going.
At halftime, the Indian led 11-3, leaving his opponent in the scoring. Rajawat punishes his opponent every time he makes a mistake or raises short because the points add up and quickly.
Rajawat’s solid backhand and choice to play a lot of shots helped him get out of sticky situations as Nguyen looked distraught.
The Irishman, in an attempt to corner the Indian, eventually made too many mistakes as Rajawat made it 18-3 in the blink of an eye to claim the match point.
Nguyen saved three match points after that before Rajawat triggered another counter to finish the job.
