Hyrax and IUD
Situated between Gujarat and Maharashtra, Daman is a semi-autonomous enclave at the mouth of the Daman-Ganga river surrounded by Gujarat, while Diu is a small island off the coast of Gujarat. Daman is known for its turquoise waters, romantic beaches, charming villages and Portuguese ruins. Located on the banks of the Daman Ganga River, Daman was a Portuguese province for around 300 years before gaining independence in 1961.
Diu was also a former Portuguese colony with a rich history, architecture and culture. Diu is sometimes confused with the neighbor of Daman although it is nearly 672 km away. Diu is a place steeped in history as it was here that Francisco de Almeida defeated the Egyptian-Arab-Indian fleet in the naval battle of Diu in 1509 and achieved supremacy in the Indian Ocean. In terms of effects, this naval battle was one of the most important battles in world history.
Diu Beaches
There are several beaches in the small union territory of Diu. The one located at the western end of Diu in the village of Vanakbara Gomtimata Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. Secluded and with natural white sand, it’s a lovely beach to sit back and relax. The Gomtimata temple is also located on the beach. However, there are no food stalls or water sports facilities on this beach. Nagoa Beach in Diu is famous for its unspoilt beauty and swaying palms and is a center for water sports., the Chakratirth Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Diu, with sand dunes and umbrellas. Of Khodiyar Beach is one of Diu’s many secret gems. It is nestled among thick bushes and surrounded by a series of temples. Lined with dense black rocks, the beach offers a thrilling view of violent waves crashing against the rocks. This Diu beach is generally deserted.
Fort of Diu
Diu Fort, built in the 16th century by the Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, and the Portuguese to protect against Humayun, the Mughal conquerors, at the eastern tip of the island, is also at the water’s edge. The Sultan of Gujarat first made an alliance with the Portuguese. But it was only two years later (from 1537 to 1546) that he tried to reconquer the island. The fortress was destroyed, but rebuilt later. From here you have a beautiful view of the beach and the sea. This part of the coast is one of the most visited places in Gujarat.
