Badminton News: Ahead of India’s best performance in badminton at the recently held Commonwealth Games, there is more good news for fans of the sport.
Rising star Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian is the new world number one in the men’s singles category according to the latest junior rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday (16/8).
The 18-year-old Tamil Nadu player came second in the standings a few weeks ago.
With Sankar rising to the top, India now ranks 1st in the world junior singles category in both categories. Tasnim Mir of Gujarat is already the best player in women’s singles.
After a long hiatus, BWF decided to freeze ranking points earlier this month, which paved the way for Sankar to reach the top of the world rankings.
In recent history, three Indian players have reached the top of the world junior rankings. Madhya Pradesh’s Aditya Joshi is India’s first junior male badminton player to reach the top eight years ago.
Siril Verma of Telangana, after winning a silver medal at the 2015 World Junior Championships, achieved a career-high World No. 1 in January 2016.
In 2017, Lakshya Sen from Uttarakhand became World No. 1 junior. His elder brother Chirag Sen is World No. 2 among other junior players belonging to Hindustan State.
