Ilhan Omar urges Biden to speak out against anti-Muslim discrimination in India

India is said to systematically discriminate against Muslims.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — US Congressman Ilhan Omar urged the President to Joe Biden on US support for India in light of its pledge during the presidential election campaign, Wednesday (6/4). Muslim Omar asked Deputy Foreign Minister Wendy Sherman about US support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Modi is said to be a person who does not accept criticism from his government. “How much does the Modi government have to criminalize being Muslim in India for us to take action? What will it take for us to criticize the actions of the Modi government against its Muslim minority? Omar said.

Sherman agrees that the government should stand up for every religion, every ethnicity, every race, every quality of diversity in this world. “I hope we train not only for the enemy, but also for our allies,” Omar replied quickly.

“Of course,” Sherman said, noting that the United States had raised concerns about India’s human rights record directly with Indian officials.

Reported Anadolu AgencyOn Thursday (4/7), according to international rights groups, Indian Muslims have been denied the right to practice their faith under the government of Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Human Rights Watch reported in 2021 that the BJP has infiltrated independent institutions, such as the police and courts, allowing nationalist groups to threaten, harass, and attack religious minorities with impunity. Modi and the BJP have passed laws and policies that systematically discriminate against Muslims.
