FK Pilots Wellbeing Module for Elderly Care and Healthy Aging

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of North Sumatra started piloting the Wellbeing module for elderly care and healthy aging since Tuesday (11/7). This module is part of the pilot module and the 4th course of the Erasmus-funded SPIRIT project at the end of this year, concluding four courses which took place on various topics and methods offline.

Health problems among older adults include hearing loss, cataracts, refractive errors, back and neck pain, as well as osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, dementia and depression, which can even be felt simultaneously.

This is why exercise is essential for older people. Sports that are good for older people include walking, light jogging, cycling according to their respective abilities, yoga and light aerobics. Yoga plays an interesting role for older people and has optimal benefits. This was explained by Dr. Gaurav Pant, Chairman and Managing Director, Sportal Corporate Ltv, India, as a resource person at the guest lecture on the theme ‘Yoga and Biohacking’. The event was attended by 65 undergraduate students from the Medical Education Program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra.

Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India, which focuses on physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), meditation and philosophical teachings. The main goal of yoga is to achieve a balanced and harmonious state of body, mind and spirit. It has many health benefits, including flexibility, strength, balance, stress reduction, and increased mental clarity.

There are different types of yoga, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Kundalini and some more modern creations. Each style emphasizes different aspects of practice, but all aim to bring harmony.

Biohacking refers to the application of scientific knowledge, self-experimentation, and lifestyle changes to improve physical and mental performance. It involves the use of technology, nutrition, supplements and various lifestyle modifications to optimize health and well-being. The main goal of biohacking is to “hack” or improve the functioning of the body and mind. This results in better performance, increased longevity and overall health.

Biohacking techniques can include optimizing sleep, using nootropics (cognitive enhancers), tracking health indicators, using wearable devices, practicing intermittent fasting, etc. The basic principle of biohacking is to identify areas that need improvement and take proactive steps to address them.

We hope that the implementation of this public conference will provide participants with deeper understanding and knowledge regarding the comprehensive management of old age in order to bring better quality to old age.
