Extreme heat wave in India, millions baked at 45 degrees Celsius

MEDIALAMPUNG.CO.ID – Several countries on the Asian continent are experiencing extreme heat waves.

The worst heat wave occurred in India, the air temperature in some parts of India even reached 45 degrees Celsius.

Areas from northwest to southeast, including the capital New Delhi, are under severe weather warning.

According to an Associated Press report on Tuesday (5/23/2023), the Indian Meteorological Department has issued heat wave warnings for seven states in southern and central India since last week.

This warning has been extended to include New Delhi and parts of northern India when temperatures exceed normal limits.

The warning warned that the extreme heat would continue over the next few days before the rains return and ease the high temperatures.

The rainy season in the southwestern region is also slightly delayed this year and is expected to arrive in the first week of next June. This makes the air temperature higher than usual.

In the Uttar Pradesh region, temperatures even exceeded 45 degrees Celsius, resulting in power cuts lasting more than 12 hours in some areas.

Even though in March the government had issued an order for all power stations in India to operate at full capacity to reduce power outages, blackouts continued.

This heat wave, according to local weather officials, is expected to continue for the next two days.

Hundreds of residents frustrated by the blackout demonstrated outside a power station near the capital Lucknow and blocked roads over the weekend.

The extreme heat forced many city dwellers to stay indoors. Even the air temperature at night is warm, which leads to increased electricity demand for air conditioning and fan operation.

India’s main summer months of April, May and June bring warm weather to most parts before the monsoon season brings cooler temperatures. However, the air temperature over the past decade has become more intense.
