Cardinal Telesphorus Placidus Toppo, Archbishop Emeritus of Ranchi, India, died on Wednesday, October 4. He was born on 15 October 1939 in Chainpur, in Gumla diocese. Ordained a priest on 3 May 1969, he was appointed bishop of Dumka on 8 June 1978 and on the following 7 October he received episcopal ordination. On 8 November 1984, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Ranchi and on 7 August 1985, he was succeeded by coadjutor. During the Consistory of 21 October 2003, Jean-Paul ii has created and published it cardinal under the title The Sacred Heart of Jesus dying in Vitinia. Having learned with sadness of the passing of Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, Archbishop Emeritus of Ranchi, I ask you to accept my sincere condolences, which I also extend to the clergy, religious and laity of the archdiocese. As I join you in entrusting his noble soul to the infinite mercy of our Heavenly Father, I recall with immeasurable gratitude the late cardinal’s years of dedicated priestly and episcopal ministry to the local Churches of Dumka and Ranchi, as well as his contributions to the Church. more common in India and at the Apostolic See.
