Store in Focus- Baro, Mumbai

In 2014, began a furniture experiment at the Highlight Films office in the commercial hub of Mumbai. It involved handmade furniture in reclaimed and old teak, largely speaking the mid- century modern language. In the course of two years the visitors were pleasantly surprised by what they found here. The experiment propelled the next steps and the concept evolved into a brand that has its own identity but draws on the ideas and inspiration that sparked Highlight Living. This is the genesis of BARO. The vision: a seamless union of aesthetics, ethics and ergonomics.

The furniture collection consists mainly of co-founder Siddharth Sirohi’s designs, heavily influenced by the timeless mid-century modern movement, with a particular attention to the balance between form and function. The pieces are manufactured locally, using only reclaimed, weathered teak and an entirely natural linseed oil and beeswax polish. The approach is old school, relying on traditional wood joinery methods, but the result is as timeless as it is contemporary.

Apart from original designs, one can also expect to find pieces of vintage furniture, which have been restored to an exquisite new form. Whether original pieces or restored classics, BARO furniture is a nod to the cherished wabi-sabi aesthetic. The accent is on the essence of a thing, with all its charms and flaws, rather than cosmetic appeal. When an old piece is restored, it is not to hide its natural ageing, but to celebrate it. And when a new piece is modelled, it is keeping in mind the principles of balance and transience.

The flip side of Dusshera

Dusshera is a Hindu festival which as per the most popular folk lore symbolises the destruction of demon God Ravana, by the diety Rama. However, not all of India celebrates the festival by burning the effigy of Ravana. In fact a lot of the country worships him on this day.

Ravana was the greatest follower of Shiva, a great scholar, a capable ruler and a master musician. His ten heads represent his knowledge of the six shastras and the four Vedas. Ravana possessed a thorough knowledge of Siddha,”The Oldest traditional treatment system” and political science. On his deathbed Ravana taught Politics lessons to Laxamana, the brother of Rama who had defeated him. He shared experiences from his own life and guided him to have always good relations with charioteer, cook, gatekeeper and his brothers, because those are the persons who can harm you most.He advised Lakshmana never to underestimate strength of his enemy. He asked Lakshmana to always believe in astrology and movement of stars which can never be wrong. He told him to trust a minister who criticizes,a mistake he made in case of his brother Vibhishan.Ravana was a great musician, who designed his own string instrument calledRavana Veena. He also invented the bow of the violin. He also narrated very first Ragas. He composed Shiv Tandav, most valuable work on praise of Lord Shiva.

The Hindu

Which is why in a lot of parts of Madhya Pradesh, Himachal and Maharashtra he is worshipped. One of my personal experiences of Ravana Pooja include Beer, Red meat and wine. Oh, we also worship the instrument which is most representative of your work ie calculator for an accountant, measuring tape for a designer, pen for a writer etc. It is one of the most fun puja’s I have ever attended and definitely a must for once in a lifetime experience.

New Launch: Depot29, New Delhi

Till a few months back, Safdarjung Market was a regular colony market with a few regular shops, one Costa Coffee and one restaurant that has been there for eons. Today it has changed thanks to new entrants in the market like Depot 29, the brain child of Vikas Narula and Girjashanker Vohra in partnership with chef Ritu Dalmia (of Diva fame)

Depot29

Walking through the Elevator doors, it feel like you have walked into a New York city Loft, complete with Graffiti on the walls, Simple wooden furniture, reading lamps and exposed ceiling. DEPOT29 is an acoustically treated venue for artists, musicians and performers. The sonic quality has been kept live with a perfect balance across the complete frequency spectrum while the stage can comfortably accommodate troupes of 4. As a concept, DEPOT29 strives to encourage collaborations between artists from different genres and forms, to create a blend not seen before and combine it with great food by Chef Ritu Dalmia. Keeping to the theme of the place every dish in fact is a twist on a classic. I loved the serving of the guacamoles in little ‘chai’ glasses with espresso spoons, and I loved the combination of the Mango and Basil Guacamoles. For a great acoustic and food experience with a twist you should try out the new Depot 29

New Launch: Social, Hauz Khas Village

Socialize, Social-network, Social-media; the word ‘social’ seems to be taking over our lives. And now, Riyaaz Amlani, owner Impresario (of the Mocha and Smoke house Deli fame) brings to us how he envisions a physical form for the word, in the form of an all day cafe and bar called SOCIAL.

Hauz Khas Social, www.stylecity.in

“You remove form from design and all you are left with is function.” Riyaaz explains about the interior decor or rather lack off in the space. “Coffee shops and cafes have been projected as your “Third Place”, a place away from home and your work/college. With Social, for the very first time in restaurant history we have introduced the Second Place concept, a place where you can both work and play,” he continues.

Hauz Khas Social, www.stylecity.in

Spread over 8,500 square feet with a stunning view of both the Hauz Khas monument and lake, the decor of Social has been left to a bare minimum, with exposed brick walls and tiled flooring, made to resemble an old warehouse or New York loft, as was my first impression when I entered. Rugged yet chic, everything found in Social is recycled or up-cycled. The unfinished bare walls and naked bulbs dangling from the ceiling are juxtaposed against the plush leather sofas. Skeletal table clamp lights add strong lines to the large communal tables, while jute blinds cover the large windows. Everything here has been found and not bought, adding to the character of the space. Social has everything an office has; a boardroom, wall-space, conference facilities, wall-to-wall uber high-speed WiFi and built-in social interaction, along with an app for the same. The app lets you order and review food, check out the restaurant’s playlist and even check in on what the other guests in the space are up to, to allow room for collaboration and interaction between tables. Once the day ends, the work space at Social shifts gears to become a high energy bar.

Then of course, there is the food. The menu combines ingredients and cultures from across the world with a street food experience sitting in a cafe. So your fish of your Fish and chips is mini-bites, served in a mug while your Wow Bao’s, a Turkish street dish, plated to look like a burger. That element of quirkiness is not to be missed while there are not enough words to describe how tasty the food was, but that is not surprising, as experience has shown me Mr. Amlani loves his food and usually gets it right. The drinks menu is like something out of a science fiction laboratory. The Deconstructed Moscow Mule, for instance is served in a mule mug, with a beaker tied up in muslin cloth with smoked Vodka and a pipette with bitters. While the Long Island Iced Tea was actually long, served in somewhat of a long glass tube. The cocktails are definitely going to be a draw for Social.
All in all, I am definitely expecting Social to attract a young and creative crowd. Especially those who find sitting in a conventional office to cumbersome. But, will it be a long-lasting solution to keep this easily bored Generation Z excited and fill the gap left by regular coffee shops, that is yet to be seen!

Chalkboard Art!!

I came across Dangerdust online while I was reading some trending articles and had to share with you guys. I am awe-struck (not an easy feat) by this amazingly beautiful creative art display. See for yourself!!

Calvin and Hobbes quote, Dangerdust, www.stylecity.in

Martin Luther King Jr quote, Dangerdust, www.stylecity.in

Nelson Mandela quote, Dangerdust, www.stylecity.in

Going by the name Dangerdust, these two students sneak into the classroom and come up with these creative art works made of chalk on Boards. The pair are seniors in Advertising & Graphic Design at Columbus College of Art and Design and prefer to remain anonymous, though they claim most of their class mates know who they are! The duo search for a vacant classroom, a quote from either Google search or friends and lots of chalk and the result is for all to see.

As I always say, art in any form is the best way to get people across countries, race and cultures together! Here is to this dynamic duo, cannot wait to see more of their work in the next semester. And hopefully even more such work once they graduate.
