JAKARTA – In line with technological developments, RRI is preparing to carry out digital terrestrial broadcasts in Indonesia. This is an adaptation of future technology.
The statement was made by LPP RRI Senior Director Hendrasmo during the World DAB Summit 2023 forum, which took place in Munich, Germany, on Wednesday, November 8.
The Senior Director of LPP RRI, who was one of the speakers at the forum, informed the forum about the development of plans to implement digital broadcast technology at RRI.
“We want to immediately adopt digital technology in radio broadcasts, similar to the steps taken by other countries, including our neighboring countries like Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand,” Hendrasmo said.
For more than 8 years, RRI has been testing DAB+ technology in three locations, namely Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung.
According to Hendrasmo, the application of digital radio technology is highly dependent on government policy and the enactment of the broadcasting bill by the House of Representatives.
It is hoped that the implementation of digital technology will improve broadcast quality and frequency spectrum efficiency, which will promote content diversity.
The advantage of broadcasting with DAB+ technology is that the sound quality is clearer and more detailed than that of analogue FM broadcasts. Apart from that, it is capable of providing metadata, such as radio station information, song information, traffic information, and media data.
Even with this digital broadcast system, it is possible to build a network based on an early warning system whose broadcast services are necessary for people living in disaster-prone areas.
The Ministry of Communication and Information has published a regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information declaring the use of the VHF band 3 frequency as a channel for the administration of digital broadcasts, where in this frequency the systems DAB and DRM technologies (two systems in one band) will be implemented.
According to BBC Senior Systems Architect Lindsay Cornell, the implementation of two systems, namely 1-band DAB+ and DRM, is unusual, and Indonesia will be the only country in the world to implement it.
The application of DAB+ digital broadcast technology continues to grow worldwide. Almost most European countries have adopted it. Asian countries like China, Japan, India and Australia have also implemented it.
The WorldDAB Summit 2023, held in the city of Munich and attended by more than 160 participants from 33 countries, is an annual WorldDAB forum event that brings together radio stakeholders from Europe, Asia-Pacific and Besides. They came to share information on the latest developments in digital radio technology.
