In a heated debate in the House of Commons, Tory MP Jill Mortimer strongly criticized UK immigration policy, reports “GB News“. After publishing impressive migration statistics, he demanded that Britain not become part of the EU. Amid increasing pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is facing a revolt over his handling of the migration crisis, Mortimer questioned existing international agreements and conventions. He stressed that the UK cannot accept everyone who would receive asylum under current rules.
India is a safe country of origin
Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick praised Mortimer and stressed that there are genuine and fraudulent asylum claims. He defended the government’s stricter stance on asylum applications and highlighted efforts in this area. According to GB News, the government has classified India and Georgia as safe countries of origin to facilitate the repatriation of those who came illegally. Jenrick underscored the need for further action to avoid making the UK more attractive to migrants.
Sunak’s immigration plans
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitted additional steps were needed to reduce the number of migrants in the UK. He spoke about the idea of limiting the number of family members students can bring into the country. Sunak stressed that the number of immigrants must be reduced to sustainable levels. According to GB News, net immigration peaks at 745,000 people in 2022, prompting calls from the Conservative Party for tighter immigration controls. Sunak assured that he would tackle abuses in the immigration system and reduce the number of refugees.
