Badminton News: Speaking to NDTV, Denmark’s India doubles coach, Mathias Boe spoke about the historic Thomas Cup victory and how it will help boost the confidence of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty .
India’s men’s badminton team had to wait the longest to win the Thomas Cup title and the wait ended two Sundays ago when the contingent beat 14-time champions Indonesia to win the gold medal in the event for the first time.
In the final, Lakshya Sen, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Kidambi Srikanth were at their best and India took victory in the first three matches.
Danish doubles coach Mathias Boe watched the story closely and in a chat with NDTV, he talked about his training methods and how this victory will help Chirag and Satwik to progress.
In the summit between India and Indonesia, India were leading 1-0 after Lakshya Sen defeated Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the first match.
After that, India further increased their lead to 2-0 after Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty came back from a losing match to beat Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21 and 21-19.
In the third game of the final, Kidambi Srikanth beat Jonatan Christie until India made history in front of a packed crowd at the Impact Arena in Bangkok.
“Well obviously I’m very happy. Very proud of the team and Indian badminton in general. Most people don’t usually understand how hard it is to win the Thomas Cup, it takes a team of 10 players, all at the same time, playing their best and “It’s really amazing that it’s possible and it shows how many good players there are in India now. To be part of this team and to be the coach of a team that won the Thomas Cup is something to be very proud of. I really like winning,” said Mathias Boe. at NDTV.
“As an athlete you always need confidence and you get that by playing well and winning. That’s the most important thing. What can happen is when you have a big win like this- here you can either gain confidence and play better or you can just go partying all day and then it doesn’t get better My job is to help them stay focused and use that victory of the in the most positive way possible so that we can get more titles in the future. You grow as an athlete when you win, so hopefully that will take them to the next level as well.”
Chirag and Satwik were knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics last year in the group stage, ending Mathias Boe’s contract as India’s doubles coach.
However, some time later he returned to coach the badminton team and revealed what brought him back to the field.
“I miss the competition a bit, I’m bored. With an event like the Thomas Cup, even before I was hired, I felt that we had a good chance of winning. Obviously, with the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, it There are some interesting things Championship and that’s something I know means a lot to the players and the country I miss being on the badminton tour so when the opportunity arose to land another contract at short term, and even though my boyfriend has been busy this summer, it made a lot of sense for me to come back and see if I can try and get some of those medals for the team,” the 41-year-old said. .
“Well, it’s very difficult to perform at your highest level in the final, so of course I’m very happy that Chirag and Satwik can do that and play some of their best badminton at this stage in the Thomas Cup final. It’s not an easy achievement. They fell behind 19-15 but they’re still fighting. We were also lucky because you didn’t come back from 19-15 in the second set, that was a great game and I’m proud of it.”
