Doha (dpa) – Soccer World Cup hosts Qatar, often criticized for poor working conditions for migrants, has again issued a ban on working outdoors for this summer.
To protect them from the scorching heat, people are not allowed to work outside during the day, the Labor Department said. Therefore, the closing times are between June 1 and September 15, between 10am and 3:30pm.
There were also such conditions in the previous summer. Last year, the blocking time for outdoor work was extended again. According to the Ministry of Manpower, employers are also required to provide free cold water and protective clothing for their employees.
The wealthy emirates are repeatedly criticized internationally for their exploitation of workers. According to Amnesty International, about two million migrant workers live in Qatar. They come mainly from poor countries like Bangladesh, Nepal or India. Many of them worked on World Cup construction sites. The World Cup is scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
