Sprinter Saptoyogo Purnomo brings gold to 2023 Asian Para Games

Hangzhou: Sprinter Saptoyogo Purnomo once again delivered the gold medal at the Asian Para Games (AiPG) Hangzhou 2022 for the 200m race, after performing brilliantly in 400 meters on the previous two days.

In addition to the Indonesian NPC gold runner, throughout Wednesday (10/25), a number of sports in which the red and white contingent participated also won gold. Like boccia and lawn bowling. Then the sport of cycling added silver and bronze.

In the race held at the Huanglong Sports Center Stadium on Wednesday (10/25), Saptoyogo delivered an extraordinary performance to finish first, with a time of 23.34, followed by silver by the runner Saudi Ali Yousef Alnakhli with a time of 24.75. seconds and bronze by Shreyansh Trivedi (India) with a record time of 25.26 seconds.

Yogo showed impressive performances in the competition acts he participated in. Obviously, he managed to bring back two gold medals to Indonesia after facing tough opponents.

“Especially in the 200 meters, the toughest opponents were from India and Saudi Arabia. The opponents I faced were very tough,” Yogo said.

Yogo’s success in winning gold in the men’s 200m T37 was his second or third gold medal in Indonesian para-athletics. Previously, Yogo managed to clock the fastest in the men’s 400m T37 race two days ago. Thus, the para-athletic team collected 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.

The head coach of the para-athletic team, Slamet Widodo, said the children under his care still have a chance to win medals in the main events. Unfortunately, Indonesia’s hopes of adding gold to Kharisma Evi Tiarani, who was supposed to compete in the 100m T44/T64, had to be moved to race number T42/T63 as there were no participants in the T44/T64 category.

“Because there were no participants in the T44/T64 category that Kharisma Evi was scheduled to compete in, so her competition number was cancelled. We really regret this decision as Kharisma Evi was the favorite to win the medal of gold,” added Slamet.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian sport of boccia also performed very impressively, winning one gold medal and one bronze medal. The gold medal went to Indonesian boccia athlete Felix Ardi Yudha with number BC2, who before leaving was only aiming for bronze. The BC2 men’s final held at Hangzhou Gymnasium was quite fierce. Yudha, who was playing against Malaysian athlete Lee Chee Hoong, felt the pressure early in the match.

However, Yudha was able to calmly anticipate his opponent’s attacks. Until they finally managed to win with the final score of 5-3.

“The match at the start of N1-N3 was fierce but we still knew how to control ourselves, control our emotions and follow the coach’s advice and do our best. Thank God the results were optimal,” said Yudha, after the match.

Yudha faced his toughest rival until he reached the finals. To win a gold medal, Yudha always plays by controlling her emotions. Interestingly, this is the third time Yudha has met Chee Hoong. In the previous two matches, Yudha was always defeated, but this time he responded with a fine victory on the highest podium in the men’s BC2 class.

“I would like to thank the coaches, the Indonesian boccia team and the Indonesian NPC for praying and supporting me at the Asian Para Games,” Yudha continued.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Afrizal Syafa won the bronze medal in the men’s BC1 class. Unexpectedly, Boccia Indonesia was able to create a surprise by increasing its achievement from bronze to a gold medal. The gold coin came from Felix Ardi Yudha who won the men’s BC2 event.

Head coach of Indonesian boccia Islahuzzaman Nur Yadin revealed that the achievements of Indonesian boccia showed a significant increase in performance. The reason is that at the 2018 Asian Paralympics, Indonesia’s debut in boccia did not yield results, but it is now in a position to win a gold medal.

“The developments of 2018 have not yet borne fruit, in 2019 we began to actively participate in the championship, then in 2022, preparations for the ASEAN Paralympics solo managed to win a gold medal .Then at the APG Cambodia we won 2 gold medals and at the Asian Paralympics. At the games we broke the golden egg,” said Islah, nicknamed Islahuzzaman Nur Yadin.

“This feat exceeded the goal, because initially the bronze medal was certain. Then when we looked at our opponents, the gold medal was still 50:50, but in the end we managed to get,” Islah said.

The Indonesian boccia team will play one more BC1/BC2 team match which will start with Handayani, Muhammad Bintang Satria Herlangga and Felix Ardi Yudha on October 26 and 27. The steps of the Indonesian boccia team do not stop at the AiPG Hangzhou 2022, but there is a higher goal to achieve, which is to be able to represent Indonesia at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

A gold piece for Indonesia also came from Kacung who competed in the men’s singles B2 lawn bowls. Kacung defeated Malaysia’s representative Muhamad Ayub at the Hangzhou Wenhui School Lawn Bowls Green, Hangzhou, China, Wednesday (10/25). Playing at Green 1 Rink 5, Kacung continued to dominate from the first end.

The two-hour match lasted 15 ends and Kacung became champion with a score of 15-8. Kacung’s feat came as a surprise, as he only received a bronze medal.

Rumi’s coach Iqbal Doewes said the feat could not be separated from Kacung’s hard work in training. “Indeed, Mas Kacung’s goal was bronze, but today he delivered an extraordinary performance to win gold. This result is an extraordinary thing,” Rumi explained.

Kacung’s success in winning gold at the Lawn Bowls was appreciated by Chef de Mission (CdM) Angela Tanoesoedibjo who watched the match from the sidelines. “I am also proud, I am also happy, especially since we know that historically we have always been superior, sometimes even Mas Kacung has been superior so he always changes like that,” Angela said.
