Bobby and Alvi Compact in the Top 32

Surabaya: Men’s singles Bobby Setiabudi and Alvi Wijaya Chairullah advanced together to the top 32 of the Xpora Indonesia International Challenge 2023 badminton tournament in Surabaya. In the match held at the Jatim Expo, Surabaya, East Java, Tuesday (17/10/2023), Bobby advanced first after defeating the representative of Malaysia, Muhammad Alif Ahmad Fairuzly with a score of 21-13 , 21-16.

In this match, the men’s singles, ranked 176th in the world, admitted that he had regained his confidence. It was recorded that after a long absence from the competition, Bobby felt the atmosphere of the match again, which allowed him to display his best form of play.

The Land of the Rising Sun men’s singles qualified for the next round after defeating Malaysian representative Eveshgaran Vasigaran in two straight matches 21-6, 21-11.

“I know the competition in this tournament is very close in every round. “I try to enjoy the match and not see it as a burden,” Bobby added.

Alvi Wijaya Chairullah also secured victory after defeating Sri Lanka’s representative, Dumindu Abeywickrama in two straight games with a score of 21-9, 21-17.

The player born on August 24, 2002 admitted to having difficulties in the second match, while his opponent was also playing off-attack. Fortunately, thanks to his composure, the 2020 German Junior runner-up was able to win the second match and advance to the next round in 34 minutes.

“I’m grateful to be able to move on to the next round. The opponents here are not easy and I must be able to play calmly in each match.

“After that, I want to focus on my ability to go far in this tournament. “Of course, I maintain my physical fitness as much as possible given that the competition is tight so it requires excellent physical condition on a daily basis,” added the men’s singles ranked 200th in the world.

With this result, the player born on August 24, 2002 will face the winner of the match between Manav Choudhary (India) and Teh Jin Hong (Malaysia) in the next round.

So far in the men’s singles sector, Indonesia has qualified five representatives in addition to Bobby and Alvi. Three Indonesian representatives in the men’s singles sector, namely Krishna Adi Nugraha, Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay and Yohanes Saut Marcellyno, were the first to reach the top 32.

In the previous match, Krishna earned a ticket to the second round after defeating Malaysian representative, Tan Mun Dick with a score of 21-9, 21-5. Meanwhile, Ikhsan and Saut progressed smoothly to the top 32 after receiving a first-round bye.
