Three Indian champions who have a chance to win gold medals at the 2023 Asian Games

Badminton News: India won a total of 10 badminton medals in the Asian Games, but the brilliant gold medal is still very unfortunate. With nine bronze medals and one silver so far in 18 previous appearances in the continental extravaganza, Indian badminton players will give their best to clinch the elusive yellow metal at the upcoming Asian Games in Huangzhou, China .

It has been a mixed season for Indian badminton players. Despite some major disappointments, notably in the form of PV Sindhu, several players left their mark with their confident performances.

As we count down to the 19th Asiad, which begins on September 23, here are India’s top three badminton gold medalists:

1. Lakshya Sen

Lakshya Sen, the men’s singles gold winner at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, has started the 2023 season on the wrong foot. Surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum late last year took longer than expected to recover.

The 22-year-old often suffers from post-surgery allergies and failed to perform at his best on the pitch earlier this year. It took him nine BWF tournaments to reach his first semi-final of the season at the Thailand Open in June.

The Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy product has only improved since then and this is reflected in the results.

July turned out to be a successful month for the young player as he won the Canadian Open, reached the semi-finals of the US Open and the 2023 Japan Open.

2. HS Prannoy

HS Prannoy has been India’s best singles player this season. The Keralite-born player’s consistent results in 2023 helped him consolidate his position in the top 10 throughout the season.

Currently ranked 7th in the world, Prannoy is currently the highest ranked Indian men’s singles player, ahead of even PV Sindhu who is currently ranked 15th. And its appearance speaks for itself.

The 31-year-old reached a personal milestone by winning his first medal at the BWF World Championships (bronze). This was India’s 14th medal at the prestigious global event.

3. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty

India’s best badminton player this season is undoubtedly the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty. With four titles in their pocket this year, they clearly constitute a challenge for the other challengers.

The presence of Danish great Mathias Boe as doubles head coach has brought huge benefits, making Rankireddy and Shetty a formidable team to take on any opponent.

Both men tasted success for the first time this year at the Swiss Open and were quickly crowned Asian champions. Between the Indonesia Open in June and the Japan Open in July, Rankireddy and Shetty were undefeated in 12 matches.

A winning streak saw them emerge victorious from the Indonesia Open and Korea Open before succumbing to defeat in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open.

This performance also propelled them to their highest ever world ranking of world number 2.
