Bangkok With one of the largest investment projects in the country’s history, India is hoping for a breakthrough as a high-tech country. Taiwanese electronics group Foxconn wants to spend nearly $20 billion with Indian partners to build one of the first semiconductor plants on the subcontinent in the western Indian state of Gujarat. A giant industrial complex is planned, which will cover an area of 1.6 million square meters and will employ 100,000 people upon completion.
“The improved infrastructure and strong active support from the government pushed us to find a semiconductor plant here,” said Brian Ho, who oversees Foxconn’s chip business, in September. Construction of the industrial plant, which will also include display production, is slated to start in the coming year – and start operations in 2024.
